There are two challenges currently in the U.K. for patients receiving Ga-68 scans.
1. A shortage of supply of Gallium. Since October 2017, Eckert & Zielger, the only licensed supplier of Gallium generators, has had a significant increase in orders, particularly from the US, resulting in a backlog of supply. This problem will be resolved from October 2018, through an additional supplier, IRE ELIT and an increased production at Eckert & Ziegler.
2. PET/CT 2 tender is to provide dedicated reimbursement for the Ga-68 pharmaceutical. This was seen to be ground breaking, as normally the cost of the tracer is bundled into the cost of the scan. So despite this good news, the tender has been delayed its announcement until November 18.
